Hi There 👋
Thanks for diving deeper into Westercamp Consulting!
As a registered dietitian with a deep love for school nutrition, I want to help your school nutrition programs be the nutrition hub for your students and community. For over ten years, I have worked with school districts to increase meal participation, incorporate nutrition education, and invigorate the student experience.
I love the challenge of creating an innovative program out of a few resources! In my experience, school meal participation can increase with simple awareness and marketing techniques. My Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) nutrition education program increased our meal site participation dramatically (~62%) over the summer with no money being spent on incentives and marketing (yep – you read that right). The SFSP program, which I lovingly called “Pirate Treasure”, won the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Innovations in Nutrition and Dietetics Practice.
There are many free marketing tools out there – check out these great resources to add to your school meals programs:
This type of marketing can be free, which you should completely take advantage of, and with these ready-to-use announcements – simply send them to a local radio station to let the community know of your open meal sites.
Keep kiddos at your open site with fun nutrition education lessons, like the Great Garden Detective Adventure! These are simple ways for children to explore more food – and have fun!
Bonus: Tie this in with a school garden!
While this nutrition education would be perfect for National Nutrition Month, you could also incorporate it into summer or after-school meals. This is for kindergarten-aged children.
